Top 10 Free Big Island Weekend Events | February 24-26, 2023

We’re still looking at a rainy and cloudy weekend, but nothing we can’t handle! We’ve got a lot of fun to make up for after all of the bad weather last weekend.

Though most of Hawai’i Island will still be battling some wind and rain this weekend, it won’t be anything as bad as last weekend, so it’s time for some fun. There are a variety of events this weekend including a couple of opportunities to see live comedy, a variety of wonderful live music, a huge school fundraiser, and a lot more. Since a few of the events are make-ups from last weekend, we’ve included a few extra events in this list, giving you plenty of options to get out of the house this weekend!

Free Big Island Events February 24, 2023

Waimea Family Food Truck Friday - Waimea

This monthly gathering of delicious food on wheels was postponed to this weekend after having to cancel during last weekend’s bad weather. Find this weekend’s event on Friday, February 24th from 4 to 8pm at W. M. Keck Observatory Headquarters in Waimea town (across from Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital).

Enjoy some of your favorite food and beverage vendors! Bring an umbrella as the event will happen rain or shine. Plenty of space for picnic blankets and chairs so bring them along. Free entry, plenty parking, and restrooms available. This is an alcohol free event.

Da Kind Family Band at Under the Bodhi Tree - Pahoa

Under the Bodhi Tree Cafe, a new health cafe and community gathering space in Puna, continues its month of grand opening celebrations. This weekend it’s with a free, family-friendly concert featuring Da Kind Family Band. Described as a “Grateful Dead Revival,” the band will be entertaining audiences from 5 to 8:30pm at the Cafe, located at 15-2714 Pahoa Village Rd.

Ho'olokahi Chamber Choir Big Island Tour - Islandwide

This February, the Brigham Young University–Hawaii Hoʻolōkahi Chamber Choir will be traveling to the Big Island to share an energetic and multicultural program of choral music and dance. Members of the choir speak over 20 first languages and represent more than a dozen countries worldwide. The choir will participate in educational exchanges with local schools and present several evening concerts for the community. Learn more HERE.

Free Hawai'i Island Events February 25, 2023

Day at Hulihe'e Palace - Kona

To honor Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani’s 197th birthday Daughters of Hawai’i is celebrating with Day at Huliheʻe Palace during ka Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, Hawaiian Language Month! This year’s 40th anniversary of the festival will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 9 AM to 2 PM. The doors will be opening to welcome kama‘āina and visitors to: tour the Palace, enjoy the grounds, immerse in a variety of Native Hawaiian arts and crafts with cultural practitioners, enter a drawing to win a Hawaiian quilt, and support local vendors and artisans, while enjoying musical entertainment and ‘ono food.

All proceeds from the Day go towards the historic preservation, maintenance and operations of the Palace and grounds.

Kamehameha Schools Ho'olaule'a - Kea'au

The annual Kamehameha Schools Ho’olaule’a returns this Saturday from 9am to 3pm at the KS High School campus in Kea’au (16-714 Volcano Rd). The theme of this year’s event is “Huliau: A new day, a new beginning.” The annual fundraiser has free admission with an option to purchase food, crafts, carnival games, and more. Purchase scrip ahead of time to save money! There will also be waterslides and inflatables, so be sure to bring a towel and dry clothes for your keiki! Learn more HERE.

Pole Intro Class at Pole Hawai‘i - Hilo

Are you interested in Pole Dancing? or Have you been wanting to check out what Pole Hawaii is like? Now is the time! Visit them on Saturday for a FREE Intro class! Queens' Marketplace Kanikapila Monthly Concert Series - Waikoloa

Another rescheduled event from last weekend, the monthly concert series at Queens’ Marketplace, hosted by KWXX, is now Saturday, February 25 at 6pm at the Coronation Pavilion. This month’s concert features Off da Cuff, a high energy rock and roll party band that plays all your favorite hits, Off Da Cuff plays a mix of old school rock & roll featuring music from 60s, 70s and 80s from Zeppelin to AC/DC. AARP Paletas in the Park - Hilo

There’s nothing like a frozen treat on a hot day. AARP Hawaii is offering a FREE, fresh fruit paleta* or small ice cream to AARP members and up to two guests during the Paletas in the Park member appreciation event. Talk Story with AARP volunteers and learn more about what AARP is doing for members in East Hawaii. AARP members are invited to share paletas and stroll through the gardens. Guided tours will be offered to those who wish by Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens. Ben Miller Stand Up at HVNP - Kahuku

The National Park Arts Foundation has selected science-based comedian Ben Miller as the February artist in residence at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park – the non-profit’s first-ever comedian artist. Miller is a New York City-based scientist-turned-comedian who has entertained at top clubs including the Broadway Comedy Club, Stand Up NY, The Stand, and as a child, had a picture in his bedroom of Mauna Loa erupting. During his month-long park residency, he will liaise with park rangers, scientists and other local residents and will ultimately combine humor and fact to explain volcanic processes in humorous context in a special Kahuku (at the visitors station) performance from 11am to 12pm. Open Mic + Pineapple Comedy Show at Kai Loki's - Ocean View

Join the Pineapple Comedy Show gang for a night of open mic fun, followed by a stand up show featuring a lineup of local and visiting comics at Kai Loki’s Restaurant and Bar in Ocean View (92-8754 Hawai‘i Blvd). Sign ups begin at 7:30pm, with open mic kicking off at 8pm. 

Free Big Island Events February 26, 2023

'Imiloa's 17th Pa'ina La Hanau - February 26 - Hilo

You are invited to ʻImiloa’s FREE birthday celebration on Sunday, Feb. 26! Visit them at 16 ‘Imiloa Pl, Hilo, for Pāʻina Lā Hānau as they celebrate 17 years of growing with the community.

For this special event, sponsored by KTA Super Stores, they will be honoring the importance of our coral reefs with live Planetarium programs (presentations with The MEGA Lab), signature hands-on activities and crafts, the grand reveal of a new interactive exhibit — He Honua Ola: A Vibrant Coral Reef — and more! There will also be special birthday treats handed out to the first 800 guests!

Puppet Making Workshop - February 26 - Laupahoehoe

Kids can have a blast learning to make puppets using a variety of mediums with the artists from Kozmo Mimzi Ohana Arts this weekend at Laupahoehoe Public Library (35-2065 Old Mamalahoa Hwy). They’ll be there from 2 to 5pm on Sunday. Find out more aboutut Kozmo Mimzi’s programming on their website.

Superfood Social at Under the Bodhi Tree - Pahoa

Michelle is a well-being empowerment coach & super foods enthusiast who will discuss and serve superfoods to attendees. Join Michelle on Sunday to experience ideas on wellness and being your best you. She’ll be discussing food as self care at Under the Bodhi Tree Cafe (15-2714 Pahoa Village Rd.) from 11am to noon.
