Spring Break is right around the corner! There are opportunities aplenty all across Hawaiʻi Island to keep the kids busy while school is out of session. We’ve gathered together a comprehensive list of programs, workshops, and activities so that your kids can enjoy their Big Island spring break!

Big Island Spring Break Camps: Arts & Culture

Liko A’e Spring Camp

The Volcano Art Center is proud to offer the Liko A’e Spring Day Camp Program. A 2-day camp will be held at VAC’s Niaulani Campus on March 17–18, from 8:30a.m. – 2:30p.m. The camp is open to keiki ages 7-13. Music, Movement and Art

Explore the arts with Sigh Studio this spring break! This highly engaging 4-day workshop is uniquely designed to be fun while building musical and artistic skills. Students will receive personalized instruction in expressive movement, fine arts, and music. Learn more and register here.

Youth: Spring Art Experience

Donkey Mill Art Center is running not one, but THREE workshops geared towards kids of different age groups:

Ages 6–8: See & Soar with Ronit Fahl

  • Learn about the iʻo, the Hawaiian Hawk, by creating projects that explore this unique and endangered bird through moʻolelo and its habitat. In this class, keiki will learn about the majestic I’o through mixed media art projects, movement, and sound. They also learn about concepts related to this special bird, including respect, kuleana, conservation and malama ʻāina. Taught by documentary photographer Ronit Fahl. Learn more and register here.

Ages 9–12: Pulp, Carve, Stamp & Bind

  • Teaching artists Angaea Cuna and Jerry Walsh will collaborate to bring together a layered experience in paper-making, printmaking, and bookbinding! Students will learn to make paper from recycled fibers and various plants; carve and print abstract images inspired by place, using pochoir techniques; combine their work into a book using simple Japanese bookbinding techniques. Ages 13–17: Metalsmithing for Teens with Theresa Lovering-Brown

  • In this fun metal arts class, students learn a wide range of basic processes and skills for designing and creating jewelry. The focus of this class is on artistic expression and building an understanding of metalworking through presentations, demonstrations, hands-on learning, and practice. Participants master the use of tools and techniques through sawing, filing, drilling, texturing, forming, soldering, sanding, polishing and metal coloration. Students will complete 3–5 sophisticated small metal art projects, which may include: necklaces, pendants, rings, bracelets, etc. Learn more and register for this Big Island spring break camp here.

Coloring Book Creation Spring Workshop
March 13–17, 2023 | Ages 8–14 | $168 | Hosted by Yuko Green | East Hawaiʻi Cultural Center | 141 Kalakaua St., Hilo, HI 96720

Create a coloring book with local illustrator Yuko Green! This book and workshop will center around the theme of “mālama,” the Hawaiian value meaning to care for, or to preserve. Through the class, students will be introduced to and discuss native Hawaiian plants and animals, as well as canoe plants, which the Polynesians brought to Hawaiʻi aboard their canoes. Students will learn to illustrate these items as they learn about their habitats, and whether they are native or endangered.

Under Yukoʻs guidance, students will learn that art can be a powerful medium to spread awareness, and gives each of us the opportunity to think, make decisions, and consider their role in sustaining the ʻāina. At the end of the workshop, the book will be printed, and students will take a copy home. Learn more and register here.

Teens Behind the Scenes

Spring Break is nearly here, which means it’s Play Time at the Aloha Theatre! In this week-long workshop, participants will learn to build the backbone of any good show, be it for live theatre or digital media. At the end, they will support the casts of our other Spring Break camps to put on a powerful presentation for the community! Learn more and register here.

The Spring Break Showcase will be on March 17, 2023 at 2:30 PM, and will feature performers from the Musical Comedy Camp and Break Into Shakespeare workshop.

Break Into Shakespeare

Join the Aloha Theatre for Break Into Shakespeare, where they highlight and explore the themes of some of William Shakespeare’s most famous works! In this week-long Youth Theatre Camp, keiki ages 8-12 will be introduced to the Bard through short scripts, movement and vocal exercises. Students will present their scenes in our Spring Break Showcase on Friday, March 17. Learn more and register here.

Musical Comedy Camp

Kona Dance & Performing Arts and the Aloha Performing Arts Company are teaming up to bring some not-so-serious movement and musicality to students in South Kona. Learn more and register here.

  • Keiki (ages 8-12) will meet from 9am-2pm
  • Teens (ages 13-18) will meet from 9am-4pm

Play Camp with Mrs. Mary

This super fun spring-themed camp is geared toward kindergarteners through 3rd graders. Spend the day filled with fun games, gardening, crafts, and activities. Keiki Camp – Art Journaling

Explore different mediums from markers, paint, paint pens, watercolor, acrylic, foil, spritzes and sprays, glues, inks, stencils, and more at this art journaling workshop. Learn a new technique everyday, adding to your child’s unique journal.This fun workshop is great for kids to learn about art with freedom to create. Art kit included in fee. New Horizons Day Camp

The YMCA New Horizons Youth Day Camp will have a positive impact on your child! Big Island Spring Break Camps: Hands-on Outdoors + Sports

Ōhāhā High School AgriCULTURE Program
March 14–18, 2023 | Ages 14–18 | FREE | Hosted by Kōhala Center | Nāmoku Demonstration Farm, Honoka’a

The Kōhala Center’s Ōhāhā intersession program helps high school students deepen their kinship with the ‘āina and local agriculture through ‘ike that will also help them flourish in life.

  • Learn from ‘āina and kūpuna, and engage in service learning
  • Visit and work on farms in Hāmākua
  • Engage with a broad range of Hawaiian cultural protocols and sustainable agriculture practices
  • Discover educational and career opportunities in agriculture to improve food security
  • Gain deeper understanding of fulfilling kuleana to ‘āina, ‘ohana, and lāhui

Camp Kamaʻāina Kids: Spring Intersession

Keiki ages 10-14 (grades 5-8) will have the opportunity to build friendships, learn new skills, and create memories that will last a lifetime! Our Spring Break (DAY) Camp includes a variety of experiences, which are planned by our staff and aimed at strengthening each child’s Social Emotional Learning.

Activities include, but are not limited to: Hiking throughout Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, waterfall exploration, Hilo Town museums, beach exploration islandwide, cleanup and restoration projects, local farm visitations, etc.

LT Ranch’s Spring Break Day Camp

This camp is intended for kids in kindergarten through 6th grade. Campers will be led by Tara Brown with a team of local teen martial artists. Work hard and have a ton of fun. Kids’ days will be filled with athletic training, fun games, obstacle course stations, martial arts skills, growth mindset training, basic athlete nutrition, and a self-defense lesson! Survival Camp with Coach Soyer

Huaka’i FitKids are designed to give kids an introduction to movement. The programming will include functional movements involving exercises that are fundamental to all things that kids need to do when they play: pull, push, run, throw, climb, lift and jump. All the movements are taught safely and effectively under the close supervision of thoroughly trained CrossFit Huakaʻi Coaches.

With workouts that are scalable, Huaka’i FitKids can equally benefit an individual who is less active or actively participating in sports/activities by tailoring workouts so that each participant is challenged just enough to deliver measurable results and personal athletic progress. Sign-up here.

Science Camp with Coach Audrey

Ever wanted to take apart your toys? Come learn about simple circuits, LEDs, and switches — and build a robot bug of your own! Keiki Coloring Collaboration

Lauhala Weaving

Host Roy Ruiz has assumed the role of alaka’i (guide) to future weavers. As with all his artistic endeavors, including painting & portraiture, surfboard building, and most recently, architecture and woodworking, Roy Ruiz has been weaving lauhala as a means to connect to Puna and its indigenous culture. In his class, students will learn Hawaiian protocol (chanting), gathering and preparation of materials, weaving terminology in ‘olelo Hawai’i and a beginner’s project of an apo lima (bracelet or arm band). Veil and Belly Dance with Hailey

This class is open to all levels of experience. Hailey will begin with a brief warm-up, before moving on to an introduction to belly dance isolations, followed by a few new movements for veil dancing. As students put together the movements, there will be an opportunity to record, if students are feeling inspired!
