Celebrate Women’s History Month with Big Island Made’s Wāhine Makers

We’re celebrating Women’s History Month by highlighting some of the wonderful Big Island makers from Big Island Made.

It’s the last day of Women’s History Month, and we couldn’t say goodbye to March without aknowledging some of the incredible talent that comes from the women who call the Big Island home. We’ve recently partnered with the folks at Big Island Made, and we want to join them in highlighting some of the female makers, producers, manufacturors, and business owners who live and work here.

From Big Island Made:

We believe in the power of our business community to create an inclusive, welcoming environment where all Hawaiʻi Island makers and producers feel valued and supported. That’s why, to help build a culture of belonging, Big Island Made is proud to highlight diverse ownership.

There are 28 women-owned businesses featured on the Big Island Made Wāhine Makers list. They range from CBD producers to pet treat bakers, textile artists to printmakers. They include creators of some of our favorite snacks, including cookies, honey, and teas. They make things that are beautiful, functional, and that highlight this amazing Island that we call home.

But as different and diverse as their offerings are, being female business owners gives them something in common and creates a special community that supports and encourages one another. We thank Big Island Made for highlighting these amazing women-owned businesses, including BigIsland.life.

Want to highlight your local maker or producer business (or partner with BIM to help highlight these businesses)? Learn a little more about Big Island Made:

Did you know?—There’s over two thousand locally owned maker-producer businesses on Hawaiʻi Island making everything from paddleboards to nut butters, ukuleles to vitamins, and boats to beer?

Producing things locally means more diverse, living-wage jobs, opportunities for local entrepreneurs, reduced environmental impact, and less reliance on foreign goods and tourism. A strong local economy means real prosperity and resiliency for our island and protecting Hawaiʻi’s sense of place for the future.  Nothing makes us prouder than saying, “this was made right here on the Big Island!”

Big Island Made is a membership-based marketing and business development program created in 2018 to support and promote Hawaiʻi Island makers, manufacturers, and producers. And don’t forget to register your Big Island business for FREE here.
